Committed to Collaboration

Our work combines the rigor of data science with the problem-focused drive of a biomedical lab and the entrepreneurial culture of a start-up. It’s an unconventional way of conducting social science research, and it calls for scholars to reach across traditional academic boundaries and pool their talents alongside program managers, post-docs, and grad students. This collaborative environment allows us to propel ideas and deliver findings swiftly, so that we keep pace with the fast-moving challenges policymakers are facing.

An Integral Role for Students

IPL reorients academic training by placing students in a hub of experiential research activity. Working side-by-side with faculty and professional staff, graduate students and postdocs are fully immersed in an innovative research model  where they learn how to conduct rigorous translational social science using advanced methods of causal inference, and our partnerships offer a unique opportunity for them to work with external organizations to address salient and real-world issues related to immigration. Students and postdocs at IPL participate in all aspects of the policy-relevant research process, from group ideation and piloting to partnership development and outreach. This mentorship model enables us to train the next generation of social scientists to purposefully investigate and solve important political, economic, and social problems.

IPL’s Postdoc Program

Every two years, IPL brings in a new cohort of postdoctoral fellows to work on our exciting portfolio of projects. Postdocs work closely with IPL faculty and staff in a dynamic, highly collaborative environment. While the majority of the postdocs’ time is dedicated to collaborative lab projects, there is also an opportunity to develop related independent research. IPL has a strong record of publishing joint projects in top academic journals and placing lab postdocs in tenure-track positions.

Postdoc salaries are standardized based on Stanford University and ETH Zurich guidelines, and benefits are provided. Calls for applications are typically posted in late fall or winter, and interested candidates should check this page for updates.

I came to grad school to learn the full flow of research design, improve my skills in statistical analysis, undertake research projects with important policy implications, and receive mentorship with respect to all of these things. IPL has proven to be a one-stop-shop for all of my goals. It has also become a great group of friends!
